Quantitative PCR (qPCR) is able to detect a lower number of bacteria in a sample than culture methods are capable of. Using next-generation sequencing, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and high throughput DNA sequencing, a clearer picture of the bacterial and fungi present in the wound microbiome can be provided. This knowledge can improve both diagnosis and the way providers treat their patients.
